First, the bad news: The City of Auburn street dept. last week mowed down the fine stand of milkweed that was growing beside South Grandstaff Drive between the guard rail and the electric polls. As every school child knows, milkweed is where monarch butterflies lay their eggs. No milkweed, no monarchs.

Now the good news: This has been a good year for milkweed and there's still some between the electric polls and the ditch. On Feb. 26-27, AF was found to be discharging lead into the Auburn sewer system at the level of 1.94mg/l (milligrams per liter). Lead discharges are not to exceed 1.1mg/l.

On Mar. 27, AF was found to be discharging copper at a level of .31mg/l. Copper discharges are limited to .2mg/l.
